When you visit the dispensary for the first time, you are bound to encounter some terminology that’s a bit unfamiliar. This is especially the case when it comes to cannabis quantities or weighted measurements. One particular measurement you’ll hear mentioned quite often is a quarter of cannabis. How much is a quarter of cannabis, actually? How much is a quarter of cannabis money-wise? Check out all you need to know before visiting a New Jersey dispensary.

How much is a quarter ounce of cannabis?
A quarter of cannabis is actually a quarter of an ounce of cannabis. In New Jersey, an ounce of weed is the largest amount of cannabis flower you can legally purchase. However, there are actually multiple answers to this question depending on what it is you’re asking. For example, if you’re asking how much a quarter of cannabis is to determine its cost, you’re asking how much is a quarter of cannabis worth. No worries, though, we’ve got you covered with every answer below.
How much is a quarter of weed in grams?
In grams, a quarter of cannabis is 7 grams. One ounce of cannabis flower contains roughly 28 grams (28.35 grams, to be precise). Therefore, if you divide 28 into four quarters, you have 7 grams in each quarter. To give you an even broader perspective, one of the most commonly sold weights of cannabis flower in dispensaries is an eighth of cannabis, which is short for an eighth of an ounce, or 3.5 grams.
How much does a quarter of weed cost?
The cost of cannabis flower is a bit fluid—it ebbs and flows according to supply and demand within the state. As of June 2023, the average price for an ounce of whole buds averaged around $90 to $110. However, there are less expensive options available. For example, you may find something like an ounce of smalls (popcorn buds) for around $80 to $85. And trim can run much cheaper. Further, the cost of cannabis can vary depending on the quality or the availability of the specific strain.
Remember, if you intend to buy a quarter ounce of cannabis, you will usually get a lower price when you buy bulk flower. So, if you pick up two eighths of two different strains, you will likely pay more overall for your ounce.
How much is a quarter of cannabis, volume-wise?
The final reason this question gets asked is when someone is trying to determine what a quarter pound of cannabis actually looks like. Or, more likely, how many joints they can roll with a quarter ounce. In general, a gram is enough flower to roll a healthy-sized joint. Therefore, since a quarter is about seven grams, you will generally have enough flower to roll about seven joints.
There is a caveat here, however. Not all cannabis flower is the same. Some flower is more dense and resinous, which naturally means they will weigh more. Likewise, some strains are more fluffy and less weighty. Therefore, an ounce of one strain may look like slightly more or less flower than another strain. For example, you roll fewer joints with a strain like Gelato 44 from Essence than you would with a strain like PK Crasher from Ozone because Gelato 44 flower tends to be denser.
