Introduction to Cannabis Concentrates

Posted on June 17th, 2024 to Education by

Now that weed legalization is sweeping the nation, more people are consuming and smoking cannabis than ever before. One unique side effect of legalization is that experienced users are starting to branch out and find new ways to enjoy their favorite plant. One of the most potent and popular options is to use cannabis concentrates.

If you’re still new to the world of weed, you may have heard of concentrates but not used them. While you may want not want to jump in with both feet immediately, concentrates can offer a smoother and better high (when used correctly). So, let’s break out our electric dab rigs and start with today’s lesson: cannabis concentrates 101.

What are Cannabis Concentrates?

As the name implies, cannabis concentrates are concentrated versions of the cannabis plant. Basically, manufacturers extract the various cannabinoids from the plant using different methods (e.g., solvents like butane). What’s left is highly concentrated, meaning it’s also highly potent. If you’re used to seeing weed in flower or shake forms, concentrates look (and feel) much different than traditional joints or blunts.

Types of Cannabis Concentrates

Because concentrates are becoming so popular, manufacturers have devised many ways to extract cannabinoids, leading to various product options. The most common types of THC extract include:

  • Shatter – This product is hard and shiny (like glass), and can break easily, hence the name “shatter.”
  • Rosin – This concentrate is similar to the resin you might find in a tree. Because of how it’s made, Rosin (aka Live Rosin) is one of the preferred options.
  • Budder – This concentrate’s name sounds like “butter” because it’s easy to spread like peanut butter when heated. When cooled, budder resembles hard THC wax.
  • Crumble – As the name suggests, this product is dry and crumbly, resembling what you might find in a pie crust.
  • Live Resin – This product is different from Live Rosin, although similar in quality. What makes live resin so good is that it contains a much richer terpene profile than other concentrates.
  • Hash – Hash was one of the first types of concentrates, although its production method is not as sophisticated as modern options.
  • Distillate – Rather than a solid form of cannabis, distillate is a liquid that’s often used in vape cartridges.

How to Use Cannabis Concentrates

The most popular way to use concentrates is “dabbing.” In this case, you use a dabbing rig (e-rigs are all the rage) to heat and vaporize the cannabis. You only need to use a little bit, as these products are much more potent than regular joints.

Another option is to add a bit of concentrate to a joint when rolling it up. This option works best if you’re used to smoking weed but want to enhance the experience. Alternatively, you can vape some concentrates, allowing you to get high more discreetly. Finally, you can sometimes make edibles with concentrates, but you really need to know what you’re doing first.

FAQs About Cannabis Concentrates

Cannabis concentrates commonly have what percent of THC?

On average, cannabis concentrates can contain anywhere from 40 to 95 percent THC. As a rule, the denser the product (e.g., rosin or live resin), the higher the potency. Also, pay attention to the manufacturing method, as non-solvent concentrates typically have more cannabinoids and terpenes.

Should I use concentrates if I’m new to cannabis?

Ideally, you’ll build up a bit of a tolerance before using concentrates. If you’re really new to weed, we highly recommend starting small by dabbing low-potency concentrates. Vaping can be another option if you don’t want to dab.

Can I overdose on cannabis concentrates?

Technically, it’s almost impossible to “overdose” on cannabis. However, you can get too high, meaning you feel sick or dizzy or uncomfortable. Make sure to take small amounts until you know how you’ll react to each product.
